October 3, 2002. eBay closes its $1.5B acquisition of PayPal.
Elon — the largest individual shareholder — pockets roughly $165M after taxes. He had been ousted as CEO two years earlier while on his honeymoon, replaced by Peter Thiel.
His X.com had merged with Confinity, whose PayPal product gave the combined company its name.
The mastery move: instead of buying a yacht, Elon takes the entire windfall and bets it across three pre-revenue ventures most investors thought were jokes — about $100M into SpaceX, $70M into Tesla, and $10M into SolarCity.
By 2008 all three are near bankruptcy. A decade later their combined market cap clears half a trillion dollars.
The PayPal exit didn't make Elon rich. It gave him the chips to play the game he actually wanted to play.
The 10,000 hours of fintech became the starting capital for the next 10,000.
