On December 18, 2018, Elon Musk opened The Boring Company's first test tunnel, a 1.14-mile bore running beneath 120th Street in Hawthorne, California, starting near the SpaceX campus. Guests rode modified Teslas through the narrow tube while Musk made his case that networks of cheap tunnels could cure city traffic.
The whole project began as a complaint. Stuck in Los Angeles traffic in December 2016, Musk tweeted that he was going to "build a tunnel boring machine and just start digging."
Two years later the tunnel existed, and he said it had cost about $10 million, a small fraction of what urban tunnels typically cost per mile.
The Hawthorne tube never became public transit. It stayed a demo, and the company's real business emerged later in Las Vegas.
What this place records is the speed from annoyance to artifact: most people vent about traffic, very few start digging.
