Concert History | Kemper Arena — The Second Night Completed a Two-Show Booking

On Wednesday, 24 February 1988, Michael Jackson played Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri. This was the second night of a two-date engagement that opened the North American phase of the Bad World Tour. The useful history is in the booking, not in treating the second show as a duplicate of the first.

Billboard's contemporaneous “Top Concert Boxscore Grosses” table lists Michael Jackson at “Kemper Arena, American Royal Center” on 23–24 February. It names T.T.C. Touring Co. as promoter, gives a single $23 ticket price, records 33,918 tickets across the two sold-out dates, and reports a combined gross of $642,091. Those are engagement totals for both nights—not an attendance or gross for this 24 February session alone. A United Press International report filed on 24 February covered the first house and explicitly called it the first of two Kansas City concerts. UPI also reported that the first show did not sell out until that morning and that demand outside the arena was light. The building was called Kemper Arena in 1988. As of 6 September 2026 it operates as Hy-Vee Arena after a 2017–18 conversion to a multi-court sports complex. Current venue account: https://www.hy-veearena.com/

The roughly 220-metre separation is consistent with an address/approach point rather than the arena footprint. This memory therefore uses the building point with a 250-metre precision radius; it does not claim the location of the 1988 stage.
