On Saturday 12 August 1989, people entering Toad's Place in New Haven had been sold a $3.01 local-band bill, a celebration of promoter Jim Koplik's birthday, and a dance party. After Sons of Bob's opening set, the Rolling Stones appeared, using the club as a live-audience warm-up before the Steel Wheels tour. Secrecy was part of the production. A New Haven Register report originally published on 15 August 1989 says the band's management warned that its bus would continue past the club if the street scene became unmanageable. Phelps and Beach add that the stage crew inspected the house sound and lighting, the stage was enlarged, identifying labels on equipment were covered, and public telephones were disabled. The club therefore functioned as a controlled test room for a large-venue tour because its promoter relationship, technical preparation, and cover story kept the audience and street response contained.
