Finance History | JPMorgan — The Unsigned Marble at 23 Wall Street

People treat JPMorgan Chase as a glass tower that was always a holding company with two surnames.
The House of Morgan announced itself by leaving its name off the door.
J.P. Morgan & Co. had occupied this southeast corner of Wall and Broad since 1873, first in the Drexel Building. The present four-story marble block was designed by Trowbridge and Livingston and built in 1913 and 1914.
J. Pierpont Morgan died in 1913. He never worked inside the finished rooms. His son, J.P. Morgan Jr., laid a ceremonial cornerstone in December 1913.
The building opened on 11 November 1914. Departments had already been moving in from temporary offices that month.
The lot could have carried a tower. The bank built four stories on some of the most expensive frontage in the country and left the facade unsigned, as if a private club did not need a sign.
From the Federal Hall steps you can still read the geometry: Wall Street one way, the New York Stock Exchange across Broad, this low marble box holding the corner.
On 16 September 1920 a bomb exploded in the street outside. Contemporary counts put the dead at 38 and the injured in the hundreds. Pockmarks remain in the marble, visible from the sidewalk.
No one was convicted. The building stayed the firm's headquarters until later Morgan mergers moved the work into taller neighbors.
JPMorgan Chase, the S&P 500 company, is the descendant of this partnership after the 2000 combination with Chase Manhattan. The corner is no longer a daily banking floor.
Photograph the exterior from public pavement. Do not treat the interior as a museum.
