People treat McCormick as a Hunt Valley campus that always sold cinnamon in a red tin.
The first book was root beer extract sold door to door.
In 1889 Willoughby M. McCormick, twenty-five years old and newly arrived from Virginia, rented one room and a cellar in Baltimore.
He bottled flavoring extracts, fruit syrups and juices under the Bee Brand and Silver Medal marks.
The line also carried Iron Glue, advertised as a fish-based cement that stuck everything but the buyer, and Uncle Sam's Nerve and Bone Liniment for man or beast.
The working motto was Make the Best - Someone Will Buy It.
In 1896 he bought the F. G. Emmett Spice Company of Philadelphia and shipped the mill machinery to Baltimore.
Spices, until then sold loose from barrels, left the new mill in small branded packages.
The Great Baltimore Fire of February 1904 burned the factory, the stock and most of the paper.
Willoughby saved the financial books.
A five-storey replacement rose on the same site within ten months.
In 1921 the House of McCormick opened a nine-storey works on Light Street at the Inner Harbor.
For decades the building sent the smell of cinnamon, allspice and cloves down onto the promenade.
The plant was razed in 1988 after the company moved manufacturing to Hunt Valley.
The tower at 414 Light Street now stands on that lot.
The mechanism that survived is the one the cellar proved: take a bulk commodity, put a brand on a small tin, and sell it through the grocer instead of the barrel.
