Health History | Terumo — A Red-Line Thermometer After the Import Cut Off
kevin
People treat Terumo as a Hatagaya campus at 2-44-1 that always sold catheters, blood bags, and a glucose meter from a Shibuya listing.
The first book was a clinical thermometer Japan could no longer import.
The First World War cut off German, British, and American glass instruments. Hospitals still needed a reliable reading.
On 17 September 1921 a group of physicians and scientists, with Kitasato Shibasaburo chairing the founding meeting, formed Sekisen Ken-onki Corporation, Red Line Thermometer Corporation.
Sasagawa Mitsuzo, president of the Tokyo Medical Association, became the first president. Capital and skill were gathered around a small Tokyo workshop that already made colored-core thermometers.
In February 1922 the company put Jintan Taionkei on sale, its first clinical thermometer for the Japanese market.
The name later became Jintan Thermometer Corporation. Disposable syringes and needles followed in 1963 and 1964, Japan's first of each.
Blood bags came in 1969. Soft plastic IV bags followed in 1973 from the same bag technology.
In October 1974 the firm took the name Terumo Corporation. A U.S. affiliate opened in 1971.
The Hatagaya address is the later headquarters, next to the old industrial block of Shibuya's west side.
The mechanism that remains is a thermometer house that learned how to put sterile liquid in disposable plastic and then followed that skill into the vessel.
