People treat JAL as a Haneda and Narita flag carrier that always owned its own jets.
The first company had neither aircraft nor pilots.
On 1 August 1951 Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. was established with capital of 100 million yen. Aiichiro Fujiyama was chairman. Seijiro Yanagita was president. Headquarters and the Tokyo sales office opened at 8-1 Ginza-nishi, Chuo-ku.
A temporary desk had sat since 17 January in the Japan Trading Center director's room at Nihonbashi Muromachi. The Ministry licence came on 22 May. Ten percent of the shares were offered to the public in June.
On 25 October 1951 the first scheduled domestic flight left Tokyo for Osaka and Fukuoka. The Martin 2-0-2 was borrowed from Northwest Airlines. The Hinomaru on the tail was painted the night before. Operations stayed with Northwest crews until JAL could staff its own.
The head office moved to the New Marunouchi Building on 8 December 1951. The present register is at 2-4-11 Higashi-Shinagawa. The first public door was a Ginza-nishi shopfront, a few blocks from the brick facades that still face Chuo-dori.
