People treat Daikin as an Umeda air-conditioning brand that always sold heat pumps.
The first shop made radiator tubes for aeroplanes.
On 25 October 1924 Akira Yamada founded Osaka Kinzoku Kogyosho, Osaka Metalworking Industries, as a limited partnership. Fifteen people started the work. Incorporation as a joint-stock company followed on 11 February 1934.
The name Daikin is a contraction of Osaka and kinzoku, metal. It was adopted in 1963, on the fortieth anniversary, not at the founding. The first packaged air conditioners arrived in the 1950s. VRV multi-split systems came later.
The mechanism that still distinguishes the firm is the pairing of the machine with the refrigerant chemistry. Daiflon appeared in 1953. Neoflon followed. A company that could make both the compressor and the fluorochemical did not have to buy its working fluid from a rival.
This pin is the present headquarters at Osaka Umeda Twin Towers South, 1-13-1 Umeda, Kita-ku, not the 1924 workshop. The founding floor is gone. The tower opened in the 2020s on the old Hanshin Department Store South Building lot.
Daikin is ticker 6367 in Tokyo and a Nikkei 225 name. The company still prints 25 October 1924 on its corporate data page. Walk the Umeda sidewalk. The 1924 tubes are not on display here.
