People treat McKesson as an Irving, Texas distributor that always moved a third of North American medicines.
The first firm was two importers on Maiden Lane.
In 1833 John McKesson and Charles M. Olcott opened Olcott and McKesson at 145 Maiden Lane, then the wholesale spine of Lower Manhattan. They bought the stock and lease of a retiring jobber and sold botanical drugs, European chemicals, and Shaker herbs from Pennsylvania.
The shop also filled medicine chests for sailing ships leaving the East River. Daniel Robbins joined as an assistant and became a partner. After Olcott died in 1853 the letterhead became McKesson and Robbins.
By that year wagons were carrying the book across seventeen states and territories, from Vermont to California. In 1855 the house began manufacturing fluid extracts, tinctures, pills and tablets, and took medals for the work.
A later national network of affiliated wholesalers made McKesson the largest U.S. drug distributor. The 1960s merger with Foremost Dairies produced Foremost-McKesson. Headquarters later left New York for San Francisco and then Irving.
The mechanism was import plus wagon wholesale at a moment when most American pharmacies still compounded locally. Maiden Lane sat between the counting houses and the docks, so a single room could stock both a ship and a frontier jobber.
145 Maiden Lane is now in the Seaport block. The standing pilgrimage site is that address, not the Texas campus.
