Industry History | Delta — The Crop-Duster Field That Named an Airline

People treat Delta as an Atlanta hub carrier that arrived already flying jets from Hartsfield.
The first business was crop dusting.
On 2 March 1925 Huff Daland Dusters was incorporated in Macon, Georgia, as a commercial aerial agricultural company. C. E. Woolman ran the operation.
One growing season in Georgia was not enough work. In July 1925 the company moved its headquarters to Monroe, Louisiana, closer to the cotton counties of the Mississippi Delta, and flew from Monroe Aviation Field, later Smoot Field and then Selman Field.
By 1925 the fleet of eighteen aircraft was among the largest privately owned fleets in the world.
On 3 December 1928 Woolman and Monroe investors bought the assets and formed Delta Air Service, named for the region it dusted. D. Y. Smith was president. Woolman was vice president and general manager.
Passenger flying began on 17 June 1929 on a Dallas to Jackson route with stops at Shreveport and Monroe. The aircraft was a Travel Air S-6000-B that carried a pilot and five passengers.
Headquarters stayed at Selman Field until 1941, when the company moved to Atlanta. The field is now Monroe Regional Airport.
The S and P 500 airline still dates its origin to the 1925 duster company and to this Monroe field.
