People treat IHI as the Toyosu tower that always built a jet engine module and a bridge box from a 2007 three-letter name.
The first book was a shipyard the Mito Domain opened on an island in the Sumida.
On 5 December 1853, under an order from the Edo bakufu after Perry's ships entered the bay, Mito men laid a yard at Ishikawajima, now Tsukuda 2-chome in Chuo-ku.
The island sat at the river mouth.
Western hulls had to be copied where a domain could reach water and timber.
Asahi Maru and Chiyodagata left those ways in the 1850s.
After the Restoration the navy yard went quiet.
In 1876 Hirano Tomiji leased the abandoned repair ground from the Navy Ministry and opened Ishikawajima Hirano Shipyard, Japan's first private yard on that site.
In 1877 the private floor launched Tsuun Maru, a steam packet.
The limited company dates from 17 January 1889.
Shibusawa Eiichi later sat as chairman of Tokyo Ishikawajima.
Harima Dock opened at Aioi in 1907.
The 1960 merger of Ishikawajima Heavy Industries and Harima Shipbuilding wrote the letters IHI onto one book.
The legal name became IHI Corporation in 2007.
The head office moved to Toyosu in 2006.
The pin is the island, not the glass campus.
Shipbuilding has since been folded into Japan Marine United.
What remains on the original ground is the fact that a bakufu emergency yard became a private heavy-industry house and kept the island's name for a century and a half.
