People treat Hilton as a name that began on a Dallas skyline.
The first rooms were in Cisco.
In 1919 Conrad Hilton came to this oil town to buy a bank. The seller raised the price. Hilton walked across the street to find a bed.
The Mobley Hotel, built in 1916 for Henry Mobley by the local contractor A. J. Olsen, sat next to the Texas and Pacific passenger station. Oil-field shifts rented the beds in eight-hour blocks. The lobby was full.
Hilton bought the house from Mobley for 40,000 dollars in 1919 money. It was his first hotel.
The building is two storeys of red brick, U-shaped, with a shed canopy on the south face and almost no ornament. Contemporary descriptions put about forty rooms and two bathrooms, one on each floor, on this lot.
Hilton later called the method minimax: keep the cost of the room down and fill every hour the bed could be sold. The Cisco ledgers paid for later houses in Fort Worth, Corsicana, and Dallas.
He sold the Mobley in 1929. The first hotel to carry the Hilton name was not this one. That was the fourteen-storey house at 1933 Main Street in Dallas, opened in August 1925.
The Cisco building became a senior home in 1956 and a Hilton memorial museum in 1977. It is on the National Register. The address is now 309 Conrad Hilton Avenue.
The S&P 500 hotel company still traces the first purchase to this brick block by the vanished station.
