People treat PayPal as a San Jose campus and a button on a checkout page.
The product that kept the name sat here, at 165 University Avenue in Palo Alto, after Confinity left its first suite on the same street.
Max Levchin and Peter Thiel incorporated Confinity in December 1998. The first University Avenue rooms were at 399 University, Suite 2, with IKEA desks they assembled themselves. By 1999 the company had moved into 165 University, the same building Logitech and then Google had used.
PayPal began as a PalmPilot wallet and became an email payment after an engineer showed a demo in October 1999. eBay sellers pasted the logo onto auction pages. That traffic, not the handheld, is what the company kept.
Confinity merged with Elon Musk's X.com in March 2000. The merged firm took the PayPal name in 2001 and listed in 2002. eBay bought it that October.
165 University is still a short walk from Palm Drive. The mechanism is ordinary: a landlord who would rent to a team that had outgrown a closet that used to hold the fridge.
