People treat Mitsubishi Heavy Industries as a Marunouchi contractor that always built jets, turbines, and ships from one Tokyo tower.
The first yard was a government works on Nagasaki harbor.
On 7 July 1884 Yataro Iwasaki's Mitsubishi Company leased the Nagasaki Shipyard and Machinery Works from the Meiji government. The site had begun in 1857 as the Tokugawa Nagasaki Yotetsusho foundry, built with Dutch engineers. It was renamed Nagasaki Seitetsusho in 1860 and completed in 1861. The first dry dock opened in 1879.
Mitsubishi bought the leased plant outright in 1887. The works became Mitsubishi Shipyard of Mitsubishi Goshi Kaisha, then Mitsubishi Shipbuilding in 1917, then Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1934. After the postwar breakup the three successor firms recombined as MHI in 1964.
Wikidata pins the yard at 32.7422 N, 129.8585 E. Parts of the site, including the giant cantilever crane and No. 3 dry dock, sit inside the UNESCO Meiji Industrial Revolution listing. The public view is from the harbor roads and the museum, not from inside the building berths.
The mechanism is a state arsenal turned private. A trading house rented a foundry the bakufu had already paid to learn, then kept the slipways when the lease became a deed.
