People treat Mastercard as a Purchase, New York campus that arrived already named against Visa.
The first agreement was made here, in Buffalo, in the Marine Midland Trust Building at 237 Main Street, at the corner of Main and Seneca.
In 1966 Karl H. Hinke, an executive vice president at Marine Midland Bank, asked representatives of other banks to meet him in Buffalo. Marine Midland had just launched its own regional card after Bank of America refused it a BankAmericard license on the ground that the Buffalo bank was too large. Seventeen bankers answered. They formed Interbankard, later chartered as the Interbank Card Association, a network no single issuer would own.
The first mark was a small lowercase i in a circle on the corner of each member's card. By the end of 1967 the association had about 150 members and Hinke was chairman. In 1969 the ICA took the overlapping orange and yellow circles and the name Master Charge. First National City Bank folded its Everything Card into the family the same year. The name became Mastercard in 1979.
The 17-story Renaissance Revival tower, completed in 1913 for Marine Trust, still stands at 237 Main. Marine Midland later moved across the street into the tower now called Seneca One. The meeting that answered BankAmericard was held in this bank's city, not in a later suburban headquarters.
