Retail History | Shinsegae — Mitsukoshi Gyeongseong Written as a New World
kevin
People treat Shinsegae as a Myeongdong granite box that always sold a luxury floor and a Centum City mall from a spun-out Samsung retail book.
The first department-store book on this lot was Japanese.
Mitsukoshi opened its Gyeongseong branch here on 24 October 1930. After liberation the floor ran as Donghwa Department Store. Samsung took the building through Dongbang Life in 1963 and renamed it Shinsegae that November after a customer contest.
The store spun out of Samsung in 1991. E-mart and a duty-free floor were later chapters. The 1930 granite hall still faces Namdaemun.
The mechanism was a colonial department store rewritten with a Korean name so a chaebol could own the first modern retail floor in Seoul.
The pin is 63 Sogong-ro, the main building.
