People treat Marriott as a Bethesda tower and a loyalty app that arrived already named after a hotel key.
The first mugs were poured here, at 3128 14th Street NW in Columbia Heights, on 20 May 1927.
J. Willard Marriott and Hugh Colton took an A&W franchise for Washington, Baltimore and Richmond. Each put up $3,000.
Marriott's half was $1,500 in savings and a $1,500 loan. The shop had nine stools and an eight-foot frontage inside the Arcade Market.
Opening day fell on the celebrations for Charles Lindbergh's Atlantic crossing. Root beer sold for a nickel.
First-year receipts reached $16,000.
Two weeks later Marriott married Alice Sheets in Utah and drove her east in a Model T.
When autumn cooled the drink trade they added food and called the stand The Hot Shoppe. Colton sold out after a year.
Hot Shoppes, Inc. was incorporated in Delaware in 1929. Airline catering started from a shop near Hoover Airport in 1937.
The first Marriott Motor Hotel opened in 1957.
The DC-USA block now occupies the old Arcade Market frontage. The hotels came later. The nine stools came first.
