People treat Nitori as a Kita-ku, Sapporo listing that always sold a flat-pack sofa and a curtain from a factory-to-store book.
The first book was a furniture shop named to sound larger than it was.
In December 1967 Akio Nitori opened Nitori Furniture Wholesale Center North Branch at Kita 26-jo Nishi 5-chome in Sapporo's Kita ward. Wholesale Center implied a cheap warehouse. North Branch implied a head office somewhere else.
There was no other branch.
The shop incorporated on 3 March 1972 as Nitori Furniture Store with three million yen of capital. An air-dome Nango store opened in Shiroishi in December 1975. The name shortened to Nitori in 1986 and the floor became home furnishing rather than furniture only.
Shares listed on the Sapporo exchange in 1989. The first Honshu store, Katsuta, opened in Hitachinaka, Ibaraki, in March 1993.
The mechanism is a Hokkaido retailer that cut out the middleman, imported directly, and kept design, logistics, and the aisle in one book so a Sapporo price could travel.
The oldest surviving floor is the Asabu store, rebuilt around the Sapporo head office at 1-2-39 Shinkotoni 7-jo. The first counter was ten blocks south, on Kita 26.
