People treat Old Dominion as a Thomasville campus that always ran a national LTL network.
The first book was one straight truck and a ninety-four-mile Virginia haul.
In 1934 Earl Congdon Sr. and Lillian Congdon used $1,700 that Lillian had saved from telephone-company wages, in 1934 dollars, to buy a single truck running between Richmond and the steamship piers at Norfolk.
Earl drove; Lillian kept the books and took the wheel when he could not.
The name was Virginia's colonial nickname, the Old Dominion.
They first worked from the house, then from space beside a grocery in 1935 after the Motor Carrier Act put the route under an Interstate Commerce Commission certificate.
The certificate covered general freight on that Richmond-Norfolk lane, much of it tobacco, paper, coffee, and canned goods bound beyond the state.
Earl Sr. died in 1950.
Lillian took the presidency and brought in sons Earl Jr. and Jack.
The 1957 purchase of Bottoms-Fiske opened North Carolina; headquarters moved to High Point in 1962.
The company listed on Nasdaq in 1991 at $12.50 a share in 1991 dollars.
The mechanism is still the 1934 one.
A shipper in Richmond needs a crate on a Norfolk pier this week, not after a railroad schedule, and one reliable truck on a short lane beats an empty promise.
A visitor in Shockoe and downtown Richmond sees later warehouses on the same freight grid.
The network outgrew the house.
