People treat Honeywell as a Charlotte aerospace ticker that arrived already making cockpit systems.
The first product was a furnace damper.
In 1885 Albert Butz, a Swiss immigrant living in the Twin Cities, patented a damper flapper that opened and closed a coal-furnace damper from a thermostat on the wall.
On 23 April 1886 investors incorporated the Butz Thermo-Electric Regulator Company in Minneapolis to make it.
Butz left two years later. The patents stayed with the firm.
William R. Sweatt bought the company by 1902 and, after several name changes, ran it as the Minneapolis Heat Regulator Company.
In 1906 Mark C. Honeywell started a separate heating company in Wabash, Indiana.
The two firms held patents that blocked each other. They merged in 1927 as the Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Company, with headquarters on this South Minneapolis campus at Fourth Avenue and Twenty-seventh Street.
The round thermostat that later filled American hallways was designed and made here.
Honeywell kept this plant as its corporate home until AlliedSignal acquired the company in 1999 and moved the headquarters east, later to Charlotte.
The S and P 500 industrial still dates its origin to Butz's 1885 regulator and this Minneapolis works.
