People treat Thermo Fisher as a Waltham campus that always sold pipettes and mass spectrometers.
The first product was a converter that never became the business.
In 1956 George N. Hatsopoulos, an MIT mechanical-engineering doctorate, and Peter M. Nomikos, a Harvard Business School graduate who put up the first money, founded Thermo Electron.
Hatsopoulos had borrowed $50,000 while still a graduate student.
The first shop was a garage.
The only other employee was his brother John.
The device was thermionic: heat to electricity with no moving parts, taken from Hatsopoulos's thesis.
The converter did not find a commercial market.
The company survived by selling the instruments that measured heat, gas and later molecules.
Headquarters settled at 81 Wyman Street in Waltham.
On 9 November 2006 Thermo Electron closed a stock-for-stock purchase of Fisher Scientific, the Pittsburgh laboratory-supply house Chester G. Fisher had started in 1902.
The combined name is Thermo Fisher Scientific.
The listed parent still files from Waltham.
The mechanism is the 1956 one: a thesis machine that failed as a product, then a catalogue of tools that other laboratories had to buy.
