People treat Dow as a Midland chemicals ticker that arrived already making plastics and coatings.
The first commercial product was bleach from brine.
Herbert Henry Dow came to Midland in 1890 after a student project at the Case School of Applied Science showed him that Michigan brine carried bromine.
His first two firms failed or threw him out. The Midland Chemical Company, started in a rented flour-mill barn on Main Street, used a secondhand generator to pull bromine from the wells by electrolysis.
In 1897 he organized The Dow Chemical Company on land across town that is still the Michigan Operations site.
Bleach powder went into commercial-scale production in 1898. Midland Chemical was folded into Dow in 1900.
Two years after the 1897 filing he bought eight sandy acres on Eastman Avenue and began the gardens that later opened to the public as Dow Gardens. The house on that lot, The Pines, was finished in 1899.
The S and P 500 materials firm still dates its founding to this 1897 Midland incorporation and to the brine under the Saginaw Valley.
