People treat ExxonMobil as an Irving campus that arrived already named after a New Jersey holding company.
The Ohio corporation that became Standard Oil of New Jersey, then Exxon, was chartered here, in Cleveland, on 10 January 1870.
John D. Rockefeller had gone into refining in 1863 with Samuel Andrews and Maurice Clark on three acres south of Kingsbury Run in the Flats. He bought Clark out in 1865. Henry M. Flagler joined in 1867. By 1870 Rockefeller, Andrews & Flagler ran the largest refineries in the city. They folded the partnership into The Standard Oil Company, capital one million dollars.
Early offices sat with other tenants in the Cushing Block on Public Square, over William Taylor's dry-goods store, while the works stayed on the Cuyahoga. The 1863 Excelsior Works near Main and River was the first ground. From Cleveland the firm took most of American refining before the 1911 breakup sent the New Jersey successor down the line that later took the Exxon name.
Irving is not the pin. The Flats and the Square are where the charter was written.
