People treat Mercari as the eighteenth floor of Roppongi Hills Mori Tower that always ran a flea-market listing from a Tokyo unicorn.
The first book was a three-founder company named Kouzoh.
On 1 February 2013 Shintaro Yamada, Ryo Ishizuka, and Fumiaki Tomishima incorporated the firm. The Mercari app shipped on iOS and Android that July.
Within a year the floor had a million listings. The company listed on the TSE in 2018 as Japan's first consumer-internet unicorn.
The mechanism was a phone camera plus prepaid postage: a used object photographed at home and dropped at a convenience store, with the platform taking a cut instead of running a warehouse.
The pin is Mori Tower at 6-10-1 Roppongi, where the book still sits.
