People treat UnitedHealth as an Eden Prairie campus and an Optum network that arrived already the size of a midwestern state.
Richard Taylor Burke founded Charter Med Incorporated in the Twin Cities in late 1974 to process claims for doctors at the Hennepin County Medical Society.
United Healthcare Corporation was formed in 1977 to buy Charter Med and build a network health plan for seniors. Burke sat on the board from that year and ran the firm until 1987.
The company listed in 1984, took the UnitedHealth Group name in 1998, and kept its long Minnesota seat at 9900 Bren Road East in Minnetonka until the headquarters moved to Optum Circle in Eden Prairie in 2024.
The claims room for a county medical society came first. The first desk was here in the Twin Cities.
