People treat Bank of America as the San Francisco hall Amadeo Giannini opened in 1904.
The listed parent is a Charlotte book.
On 18 February 1874 Commercial National Bank of Charlotte was chartered with $50,000 in equity from local merchants and two Alamance textile families, the Holts.
Clement Dowd, a lawyer, was the first president.
The first rooms sat on the 200 block of South Tryon Street, on the lot where Jefferson Davis had stayed in April 1865.
A later city directory put the bank at 141 South Tryon.
The 1912 Commercial National Bank Building rose twelve storeys on that block.
In 1957 the house merged with American Trust, a few doors down Tryon, to form American Commercial Bank.
In 1960 that bank joined Security National of Greensboro as North Carolina National Bank.
NCNB became NationsBank in 1991.
In 1998 NationsBank bought San Francisco's BankAmerica and kept the older name on a Charlotte charter.
The Corporate Center at 100 North Tryon, opened in 1992, is the public face of that line.
Giannini's Bank of Italy is the brand the merger bought.
The mechanism that survived is the Charlotte one: a textile-town national bank that used interstate compact law to buy a coast-to-coast name.
