People treat Kimberly-Clark as a Dallas tower that always sold Kleenex and Huggies.
The first company made newsprint from rags.
On 22 October 1872 John A. Kimberly, Havilah Babcock, Charles B. Clark and Franklyn C. Shattuck opened Kimberly, Clark and Co. at the Globe Mill in Neenah, Wisconsin, with $42,000 in 1872 dollars.
The mill sat on the Fox River power that had first drawn flour grinders to the same bank.
It was the first mill in the state to make newsprint entirely from linen and cotton rags.
The mechanism was water, rag stock and a paper machine, not a brand.
Kotex arrived in 1920 and Kleenex in 1924, after the company learned to make Cellucotton during the First World War.
Headquarters left for Irving, Texas, in 1985.
The X-Mill at 126 North Commercial Street still occupies the original Globe Mill lot and runs product trials on the same ground.
