People treat Oriental Land as the Maihama operator that always ran Tokyo Disneyland under a Disney licence and no Disney equity.
The first book was a reclamation company with three desks.
On 11 July 1960 Keisei Electric Railway president Chiharu Kawasaki and Mitsui Fudosan president Hideo Edo opened Oriental Land inside Keisei's head-office building at Ueno. Capital was 250 million yen in 1960 money. Three employees sat in a corner of the fifth floor.
The 1959 prospectus said the firm would fill the sea off Urayasu, sell house lots, and build a large recreational ground.
A prefectural reclamation pact followed in July 1962. Fill work began in 1964. The last pad, Maihama, was finished in 1970.
A basic Disney alliance was signed in December 1974. The licence, design, and operating contract for Tokyo Disneyland closed in April 1979. The park opened on 15 April 1983 on about 200 acres of the new ground.
The mechanism is still the Ueno one.
A railway that already carried people toward Chiba could make the land under their feet and then rent a foreign park to keep them on the line. The fill came first. The castle came later.
A visitor at Keisei Ueno still stands two minutes from those fifth-floor rooms. Maihama is a station name now.
The castle outgrew the three desks.
