People treat Synopsys as a Sunnyvale EDA house that always sat beside Cadence on a Middlefield campus.
The first company was a North Carolina spin-out.
In 1986 Aart de Geus, David Gregory, and Bill Krieger founded Optimal Solutions in Research Triangle Park after General Electric left the semiconductor business.
The charter was to sell the logic-synthesis work the team had built inside GE's Advanced Computer-Aided Engineering Group.
In 1987 the firm renamed itself Synopsys and moved to Mountain View.
Synthesis let a designer write a hardware description and have software compile it into gates, instead of drawing each gate by hand.
The company listed on Nasdaq in February 1992 at 18 dollars a share and closed the first day at 31.50 dollars.
Headquarters later shifted down the peninsula to Sunnyvale; the long Mountain View address was 690 East Middlefield Road.
The mechanism is compilation of a chip, not a drawing board.
Stand on East Middlefield and you are at the campus that grew from that GE exit.
