People treat Arm as the Fulbourn Road campus that always licensed a RISC core into someone else's silicon.
The first book was a joint venture in a converted barn.
On 12 November 1990 twelve Acorn designers — Jamie Urquhart, Mike Muller, Tudor Brown, Lee Smith, John Biggs, Harry Oldham, Dave Howard, Pete Harrod, Harry Meekings, Al Thomas, Andy Merritt, and David Seal — were written into Widelogic Limited. The name became Advanced RISC Machines Limited on 3 December.
Acorn supplied the people. Apple put in three million dollars in 1990 money for a low-power core aimed at the Newton. VLSI supplied tools.
Robin Saxby arrived in 1991 as the first chairman and chief executive. The team worked from a turkey barn at Swaffham Bulbeck, a village east of Cambridge, for about four years. The ARM610 designed there went into Apple's handheld.
The mechanism is a processor house that never fabricated the chip. It sold the instruction set and the drawings so handset and later phone makers could put a low-watt core on their own die.
The campus now sits at 110 Fulbourn Road. SoftBank bought the listed book in 2016. The listing returned in 2023.
The pin is the village where the barn stood, not the later Fulbourn gate.
