People treat Uber as a Mission Bay campus that always ran a global app.
The first public rooms were a floor of an old furniture warehouse on Market Street.
Garrett Camp bought the UberCab.com domain after a Paris winter in late 2008. The firm was founded in 2009. Ubercab, Inc. was incorporated in Delaware in July 2010. The San Francisco service opened that summer with a handful of black cars and a mobile request.
In October 2010 the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and the California Public Utilities Commission sent cease-and-desist letters. One objection was the word cab in a company that held no taxi medallion. The name dropped to Uber. The cars kept rolling.
The mechanism was a dispatch that sat on the phone instead of a radio room. A rider saw a car on a map. A driver accepted a fare without a street hail. The city licensed the hail. The app licensed nothing.
By the 2015 Form D the principal office was listed at 1455 Market Street, 4th Floor, a 1970s concrete block that also housed Square and Reddit. The building still stands at Market and 11th. Uber later moved to Mission Bay and then to 1725 Third Street.
The ticker is UBER on the New York Stock Exchange. This pin is the Market Street block where the cease-and-desist years were run, not the first apartment desk and not the present waterfront campus. Photograph the sidewalk. Do not try the lifts.
