People treat Danaher as a Washington science holding company that always owned diagnostics and bioprocess tools.
The first book was a Florida mortgage trust.
DMG, Inc. was organized in Massachusetts in 1969 as a real-estate investment trust. In 1978 it became Diversified Mortgage Investors, a Florida corporation still tied to retirement-home lots. In 1983 Steven M. Rales and Mitchell P. Rales took control after a proxy fight.
In 1984 the brothers renamed the holding company Danaher, after a creek in western Montana where they had talked through the plan while fishing. They reincorporated in Delaware and bought Mohawk Rubber and Master Shield that same year. Revenues in 1984 were about 300 million dollars.
The present corporate office is Suite 800W at 2200 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. The public view is the Pennsylvania Avenue sidewalk. The suite is not a visitor hall.
The Danaher Business System was written in 1988 as a continuous-improvement manual copied across acquired plants. That operating book, not the original REIT, is what later bought life-science and diagnostics firms.
The mechanism is a renamed shell. A mortgage trust supplied a listed vehicle. Two brothers then filled it with industrial companies they thought they could run harder.
This pin is not a Montana riverbank. The name came from the creek. The office that still files the 10-K faces Pennsylvania Avenue.
