Health History | Kyowa Kirin — Harmony Fermentation After the Distillers' Cartel
kevin
People treat Kyowa Kirin as an Otemachi antibody house that always sold Crysvita from a Kirin holding company.
The first book was a fermentation firm written out of three distillers.
On 1 July 1949 Kyowa Hakko Kogyo Co., Ltd. was established as a successor company of Kyowa Sangyo under the Enterprise Reorganization Act. The name meant harmony fermentation.
The deeper lab sat earlier. In 1936 Takara Shuzo, Godo Shusei and Nihon Shurui funded the Kyowa Chemical Research Institute in Hatagaya, Shibuya, to turn molasses into butanol.
Kato Benzaburo led that work. After the war the same fermentation bench was pointed at medicine.
In 1951 Kyowa Hakko licensed streptomycin production from Merck and Co. and mass-produced the anti-tubercular in Japan for the first time. In 1956 the company isolated and commercialized the anticancer agent Mitomycin C, and in the same year invented a fermentation route to L-glutamic acid.
Kirin Brewery, founded in 1907 from the Japan Brewery that had taken over William Copeland's Spring Valley plant in Yokohama, later built its own drug book. Kirin Pharma was stood up in 2007 when the brewery became a pure holding company.
On 1 October 2008 Kyowa Hakko Kogyo merged with Kirin Pharma and took the name Kyowa Hakko Kirin. The biochemical book was spun out as Kyowa Hakko Bio. The listed name became Kyowa Kirin Co., Ltd. on 1 July 2019.
The present headquarters is Otemachi Financial City Grand Cube, 1-9-2 Otemachi, Chiyoda-ku. Reception is on the seventeenth floor. The pin is the public Grand Cube frontage, not the classified suites.
The mechanism is fermentation first, antibodies later. A distillers' cartel that once made wartime solvents learned to grow a drug in a tank, then folded a brewer's pharma desk into the same book.
This pin is not Yokohama Namamugi. The listed drug company was chartered in 1949 and now sits over Otemachi Station.
