Finance History | SMFG — The Holding Company Built Over Two Houses
kevin
People treat Sumitomo Mitsui as a bank that was always one firm.
The listed parent is a 2002 holding company.
Sumitomo Bank and Sakura Bank, the old Mitsui house, merged on 1 April 2001 as Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.
On 2 December 2002 SMBC transferred its shares into a new parent, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group.
SMFG's own FAQ records that date and the later fold-in of the card, leasing and research units in February 2003.
Headquarters is the SMBC Head Office Building at 1-2 Marunouchi 1-chome.
Pin the public entrance on that block.
Describe only what is visible from the Marunouchi sidewalk.
Sakura's Mitsui lineage and Sumitomo's Osaka house are older than the holding company.
What survived is a 2001 merger wrapped, a year later, in a listed parent so the group could buy more than a bank.
