Technology History | Micron — The Dentist Basement at Cole and Northview
kevin
People treat Micron as a Federal Way fabrication campus that arrived already feeding AI racks.
The corporation was formed here, in the basement of a dentist's office at Cole Road and Northview Street in Boise, in October 1978.
Ward Parkinson, his twin Joe Parkinson, Dennis Wilson, and Doug Pitman incorporated Micron Technology as a semiconductor design shop. Pitman had wanted to leave Dallas. He took the basement lease and bought a house. Ward later said the pause before he agreed was long.
Idaho businessmen Tom Nicholson, Allen Noble, Rudolph Nelson, and Ron Yanke put in the first money. J. R. Simplot, whose fortune came from potatoes, funded the move from consulting into silicon.
Sedative gas from the surgery above drifted into the rooms. The first contract was a 64-kilobit DRAM design. Ground broke in 1980 on Fab 1 at 8000 South Federal Way. The first 64K parts shipped in 1981 and went into machines that included the Commodore 64.
Micron listed on Nasdaq in 1984. It entered the Fortune 500 in 1994. The 1998 purchase of Texas Instruments' memory operations made the Boise house a global supplier rather than a regional design shop.
The public campus is the Federal Way works. The origin is a rented cellar under a dental chair at this intersection, not the later cleanrooms.
