People treat Super Micro as the Rock Avenue campus that always sold a GPU rack to a cloud buyer from an S and P 500 book.
The first book was five people after a motherboard shop closed.
On 28 September 1993 Charles Liang, Sara Liu and Wally Liaw incorporated Super Micro Computer in San Jose.
Liang had just left Micro Center Computer, a board house he had run from 1991. Liu, his wife, kept the books. The shop turned a profit after six months and stayed profitable every year that followed.
The early product was not a finished cloud rack. It was a server board and a chassis sold as building blocks that a reseller could assemble.
A UK partner, Boston Limited, took the boards into Europe the same year. The later Green Computing Park and the Qume Drive campus still sit in north San Jose.
The mechanism is a configurator that treats a server as parts a customer specifies, then a line that puts those parts into a box before a hyperscaler writes its own name on the door.
The pin is Rock Avenue in San Jose, the street the California book still lists, not a later Taiwan park.
