Finance History | Aflac — The Six Rooms Downtown, Then the Tower on Wynnton
kevin
People treat Aflac as a duck and a ticker that arrived already paying cancer claims in two countries.
The first policies were written here, in Columbus, Georgia, from a six-room office in the downtown core, before the company built the tower that still marks the skyline at 1932 Wynnton Road.
John, Paul and William Amos founded American Family Life Insurance Company of Columbus on 17 November 1955. John had come that summer from Jacksonville with seed money from pipeline legal work. Georgia's insurance department was respected, Columbus had no home-office carrier, and local investors were used to putting money into a new book. The firm opened with sixteen home-office staff and about sixty agents walking doors in Georgia and Alabama. A licence to sell followed on 28 March 1956. After the first year the book held more than 6,400 policies.
In 1957 the brothers wrote a cancer policy, the product that defined the firm. Cluster selling at workplaces began in 1964, the year the name became American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus. The Aflac acronym was adopted in 1990. Japan became the larger market.
Historic Columbus places the first rented rooms on the northwest corner of 13th Street and Broadway. The visible pin is the 19-storey Aflac Building on Wynnton, ordered in 1974 and occupied on 19 December 1975, still the tallest tower in the city. The company never left Columbus. The duck came later. The six rooms came first.
