People treat UPS as an Atlanta campus and a brown truck that arrived already named Next Day Air.
The first messages left here, from a 6-by-17-foot basement under a Pioneer Square saloon at Second Avenue and Main Street, on 28 August 1907.
James E. Casey, nineteen, and Claude Ryan borrowed $100 from Ryan's uncle, Charley Jones, and paid $20 a month for the room. It held one table, a bench and two telephones. They slept on the saloon lunch counter with the pillows toward the phones. Delivery was on foot, by bicycle and by streetcar. The posters pinned near public telephones promised best service and lowest prices, twenty-four hours, including holidays. Whistling was forbidden. Uniforms were bought by the boys themselves.
By Christmas 1912 the book listed about a hundred messengers and a second office at 1602½ Second Avenue. In 1913 they merged with McCabe's Motorcycle Delivery, bought a Model T, and took on Seattle department stores that had no easy way to send a parcel home. The name became United Parcel Service when the firm opened in Oakland in 1919.
Waterfall Garden Park now occupies the corner, at 219 Second Avenue South, given by the Annie E. Casey Foundation in 1977. The brown truck came later. The basement under the saloon came first.
