People treat BD as a Franklin Lakes campus that always made needles and blood tubes for hospitals.
The first book was a rented third floor in lower Manhattan.
In September 1897 Maxwell W. Becton and Fairleigh S. Dickinson opened Becton, Dickinson and Company on Vesey Street.
They split an eight-thousand-dollar investment, in 1897 dollars, and sold imported glass syringes for two dollars and fifty cents apiece.
The partners had met a year earlier in a Texarkana station, both North Carolina men on the road, one carrying medical stock and the other paper samples.
Becton bought out an earlier partner so Dickinson could come in.
For a decade the firm sourced thermometers and syringes rather than blowing its own glass.
In 1906 the partnership incorporated.
In 1907 it left Vesey Street for a factory on Cornelia Street in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where the partners began to make thermometer tubes and syringes themselves.
The Luer-Lok tip, patented by Dickinson in 1925, locked a needle onto a syringe so the joint would not spray under pressure.
Insulin syringes followed in 1924, after the hormone reached the clinic.
The ACE bandage arrived in 1918.
The Evacutainer blood-collection patent in 1949 pushed the firm from hardware into diagnostics.
The original Vesey loft is gone under the rebuilt streets west of Church.
What remains is the mechanism: two traveling salesmen who stopped buying other men's glass and started making their own.
