People treat Schwab as a Westlake, Texas campus that arrived already named after a discount screen.
The address the city still calls the Schwab Building is here, at 101 Montgomery Street, on the north edge of San Francisco's Financial District.
Charles R. Schwab incorporated First Commander Corporation in California in April 1971 as a subsidiary of Commander Industries, to run a conventional brokerage and print an investment newsletter. That November he and four partners bought the stock. In 1973 the firm took his name. The event that made the firm was not the incorporation. It was 1 May 1975, when the SEC ended fixed commissions. Schwab cut the ticket and opened a first branch in Sacramento that September.
101 Montgomery, a 28-storey tower finished in 1984, became the headquarters people could point to. The firm later filled 211 Main Street near the Embarcadero, then moved corporate control to Texas after the TD Ameritrade combination. The San Francisco pin that still carries the name is this one.
The tower stands 404 feet at Montgomery and Sutter, a short walk from the Montgomery Street BART station. For two decades the switchboard and the research floor sat behind this glass. The discount that followed May Day was invented in this city, not in a later Texas campus.
