Technology History | Meta — Room H33 at Kirkland House
kevin
People treat Meta as a Menlo Park campus that arrived already named Facebook.
The first server that carried thefacebook.com sat here, in suite H33 of Kirkland House at 95 Dunster Street, Cambridge, on 4 February 2004.
Mark Zuckerberg was a Harvard sophomore. The room was a forced triple of about five hundred square feet, thin walls, few outlets, no air conditioning. He coded at a small wooden desk, heated Hot Pockets in a microwave, and wrote lines on a whiteboard. Roommates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes lived in the same house. Eduardo Saverin handled the early money. The site cost about eighty-five dollars a month to keep online.
Within twenty-four hours it had 650 Harvard accounts. Within two weeks it had 4,300. Zuckerberg left the College the next year and did not come back as a student. He walked the room again in May 2017, before giving the commencement address, and pointed at the same desk.
There is still no plaque on the door. The house is a working dorm. It is not 1 Hacker Way. It is the first address the corporation ran from.
