People treat 7-Eleven as a Dallas chain that Japan merely licensed.
The first Japanese store opened here, at what is now 4-6-1 Toyosu in Koto-ku, Tokyo, on 15 May 1974.
York Seven had been formed in November 1973 after Ito-Yokado signed a licence with the Southland Corporation of the United States. Toshifumi Suzuki pushed the format against staff who called it premature.
Kenji Yamamoto converted the family liquor shop, Yamamoto Shigeru Shoten, into the first franchise. Hours ran from 07:00 to 23:00, the span in the American name. A first customer bought sunglasses for 800 yen in 1974 currency.
Twenty-four-hour trading began the next year at the Toramaru store in Koriyama, Fukushima, not at this counter. Film-wrapped onigiri arrived in 1978. The company name became Seven-Eleven Japan the same year. Listing on the Tokyo Stock Exchange's Second Section followed in 1979.
By fiscal 2023 the chain had 21,533 stores in Japan and 5.3 trillion yen in sales. The parent, Seven and i Holdings, is the Nikkei 225 retailer. In 1991 the Japanese house took equity in Southland and a seat in the American management.
The liquor shop is gone. The present 7-Eleven Toyosu store still occupies 4-6-1 and still trades as the recorded first shop. The American hours were only the opening move. The Japanese store became the model the parent later carried abroad.
