People treat Nintendo as a Minami-ku campus that arrived already named Mario.
The first cards were cut in this neighborhood, in Shimogyo-ku, on 23 September 1889.
Fusajiro Yamauchi bought a vacant house near Shichijo and opened Yamauchi Fusajiro Shoten, also called Nintendo Karuta, to print hanafuda.
Meiji law had relaxed the ban on flower cards in 1885.
Gamblers replaced a deck after each hand, which made a local printer a volume business.
The characters in the name read, roughly, leave luck to heaven.
Western playing cards followed.
Nintendo's own chronology dates the first Japanese-made trump decks to 1902.
The wooden 1889 shop is gone.
It was demolished in 2004 and the lot became parking.
What still stands is the 1933 reinforced-concrete hall built by Fusajiro with his son Sekiryo when they formed Yamauchi Nintendo as a partnership.
The block at 342 Kagiyacho, Shomen-dori west of the Kamo, held the office, the family rooms, and the warehouse until the firm left in 1959 for Fukuine in Higashiyama.
Marufuku Co., Ltd., the corporate ancestor of today's Nintendo Co., Ltd., was registered in 1947.
The present company name dates from 1963.
The 1933 buildings opened in 2022 as the hotel Marufukuro, with a new wing supervised by Tadao Ando.
A period plate still names karuta and trump.
The pin is the public frontage on Shomen-dori.
The interiors are a hotel, not a works.
