People treat Ball as a Broomfield can and aerospace house that always printed a silver soda end.
The first book was a Buffalo tin shop bought on a family loan.
In 1880 Frank C. Ball and Edmund B. Ball borrowed two hundred dollars from their uncle George Harvey Ball and bought the Wooden Jacket Can Company in Buffalo, New York.
The shop made tin cans sheathed in wood for kerosene, paint, and varnish.
The contents ate the tin, so the brothers tried glass.
By the mid-1880s they had a two-story stamping works and a one-story glasshouse in East Buffalo and were turning out home-canning jars.
In 1887 they moved the works to Muncie, Indiana, where a natural-gas boom made furnace heat cheap.
The Muncie plant opened in 1888.
By 1900 Ball Brothers Glass Manufacturing Company claimed the largest fruit-jar output in the world, some 240,000 machine-made jars a day.
The firm took the name Ball Corporation in 1969, listed on the New York Stock Exchange in 1973, and left glass for metal containers and aerospace.
Headquarters sat at 345 South High Street in downtown Muncie until the 1998 move to Colorado.
The mechanism that made the name was not a recipe.
It was a cheap, repeatable glass jar sold to kitchens that put up fruit, then a later shift into the beverage can that replaced that jar.
The High Street block is now an Ivy Tech campus building, but the town still carries the brothers' name on a university and a foundation.
