People treat Broadcom as a Palo Alto headquarters and an Avago ticker that swallowed a name.
The company that put Broadcom on the door was founded here, in Henry Nicholas's spare bedroom in a Redondo Beach condo, in August 1991.
Henry Samueli, then on the UCLA electrical-engineering faculty, and Nicholas, his first Ph.D. student, each wrote a five-thousand-dollar check. They had met at TRW. The first contracts were with Scientific-Atlanta, Intel, TRW and the Air Force, for chips that would carry digital voice, data and video.
Work moved from the condo to small rooms in Westwood, then to Irvine in 1995. Broadcom Corporation listed on Nasdaq in April 1998.
Avago Technologies, the former Hewlett-Packard semiconductor products group that dates to 1961, bought Broadcom in 2016 and took the name. The ticker AVGO is Avago's. The first room that used the word Broadcom was the bedroom in Redondo Beach.
