People treat Zimmer Biomet as a Warsaw campus at 345 East Main that always sold hips and knees from the orthopedic capital of the world.
The first book was aluminum that an X-ray could see through.
Justin O. Zimmer sold wooden and fiber splints for DePuy for twenty years and rose to national sales manager.
In 1926 he asked the firm to switch to aluminum so a surgeon could watch a fracture heal on film. DePuy refused.
On 2 May 1927 Zimmer formed Zimmer Manufacturing Company with two local investors, William Felkner and William Rogers.
The first shop was the basement of the family house at Winona Avenue and Indiana Street.
Cousin Raymond Zimmer welded the frames. Dr. C. F. Lytle refined the shapes. A line of fifty aluminum splints debuted at the American Medical Association meeting that May.
First-year sales reached $160,000 in 1927 dollars and passed DePuy. The works later moved to North Detroit Street.
Bristol-Myers bought the firm in 1972. Zimmer listed on its own in 2001 and bought Biomet, another Warsaw spin-out, in 2015.
The mechanism is still the basement one.
A wood splint hides the bone. An aluminum one lets the plate and the film work together, and the town that already made splints could tool that change overnight.
A visitor on Winona still walks the block where the first frames were welded before the East Main campus took the name.
The joint book outgrew the basement.
The basement is where the book started.
