People treat a demand-side platform as a product of New York or Silicon Valley.
This one was incorporated from a former car garage in downtown Ventura.
Jeff Green and Dave Pickles left Microsoft in 2009 after the software company absorbed Green's first exchange, AdECN.
They formed The Trade Desk that year to sell advertisers a self-serve way to bid on digital inventory in real time, using the buyer's own data as well as third-party feeds.
Delaware papers were filed in November 2009.
The principal executive office listed on the 2016 prospectus was 42 North Chestnut Street.
The building is the old Packard Garage, recorded as Ventura Historic Landmark No. 31. The company still occupies it.
The mechanism is an auction that lasts milliseconds.
A publisher's impression is offered. The desk's bidders price it from the data they already hold.
The winner's ad is served before the page finishes loading.
Green and Pickles had built a first version of that market inside Microsoft. The second version was not a feature of a search company.
Class A shares began trading on Nasdaq in September 2016. The S and P 500 later added the name.
The garage on Chestnut is still the address on the door.
