People treat Carnival as a Doral listing that always sent Fun Ships from branded terminals on Dodge Island.
The first book was one secondhand liner and just enough fuel for Miami to San Juan.
Ted Arison formed Carnival Cruise Line in 1972 as a subsidiary of Boston's American International Travel Service, with Meshulam Riklis putting up the marketing book.
He bought the laid-up Empress of Canada from Canadian Pacific and renamed her Mardi Gras.
On 11 March 1972 the ship left PortMiami on her first Carnival voyage and ran aground on a sandbar off Miami Beach.
Passengers were kept in food and drink for a day while tugs worked the hull free.
The format that followed sold the ship as the destination, not the port list.
In 1974 Arison bought the ailing line for one dollar and assumed about five million dollars of AITS debt.
Carnivale joined in 1975. Festivale followed in 1978.
The first purpose-built hull, Tropicale, entered service in 1982 and started an industry shipbuilding wave.
Carnival listed about 20 percent of its common stock in 1987 and raised about 400 million dollars.
The pin is PortMiami, where Mardi Gras first cleared and where Carnival still berths.
The mechanism is a retired transatlantic liner rewritten as a mass-market holiday by pricing the week, not the cabin class.
