People treat SoftBank as a Takeshiba tower and a Vision Fund that arrived already owning chips and ball clubs.
The first company that carried the name was started here, in the Zasshonokuma district of Hakata-ku, Fukuoka, on 3 September 1981.
Masayoshi Son was twenty-four. He had come back from Berkeley the year before and tried a small computer-wholesale shop called Unison World in the same neighbourhood. With that firm and a partner, Management Research Institute, he incorporated Kabushiki Kaisha Nihon SoftBank to wholesale packaged software for personal computers. He later told rooms that he began with two part-time staff in Zasshonokuma.
The legal seat soon sat in Tokyo — Yonbancho in Chiyoda is the address some ledgers keep for the first capital — but Son kept pointing at Fukuoka as the ground. The business was meant to be a bank for software: a distributor that would put titles on shop shelves the way a bookshop puts a book. Magazines Oh! PC and Oh! MZ followed in May 1982.
Takeshiba is the later headquarters. This Hakata lane is the first place he said the work began.
